SUSAN MABRY PRESENTS CHECK TO PARK PRESIDENT

Susan Mabry, Executive Assistant of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, is shown presenting Norris Garrett, President of the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park, with a check that was approved by the Commissioners at their last meeting by a vote of 6 -0. One commissioner was absent from the meeting. This county park is definitely an asset to our area. The Park was recognized recently by the Chamber of Commerce Environmental Projects Committee for a Beautification Award. The most important thing is that it honors and recognizes our many Veterans and Active Duty Troops and shows our appreciation for their service. The Park Committee continues to raise funds to expand and improve the appearance of the Park.

WOMAN HERO RECEIVES HER MEDAL

June Drew, one of the first women pilots to fly a U.S. Military Aircraft received her Congressional Medal on July 5th, 2010, at the Veterans Memorial Park, in the pavilion, near the newly installed and landscaped Women’s Memorial Wall. It was presented by Violette Denney (right) and Tina Clune (left), members of the Abraham Baldwin Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. It was a surprise to Mrs. Drew and she said that she was going to put it under her pillow but her daughter wants to frame it for display. The wording on the medal is “WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS” and “1942 – 1944.” On the reverse side it reads “THE FIRST WOMEN IN HISTORY TO FLY AMERICAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT” and “ACT OF CONGRESS 2009.” These women were extremely brave and wanted to serve their country when they were needed.
