Construction
was started on the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Fire Pit on Saturday
August 31, 2013. The Fire Pit will be
used to burn unserviceable American Flags.
Since the VFW closed there is no other place to properly destroy the unserviceable
flags. This facility will be available
for various organizations to perform a ceremonial burning of an American flag.
The crew who
volunteered their time to build and finish the installation of the Fire Pit on
Saturday is from left to right: 1st Lt. Matt Chapman USAF;
Christopher (Chris) Garrett, a Virginia State Highway Patrolman; Jerry Garrett
Lt. Col. USAF, Retired, Langley AFB, Virginia; Mike Nowacki, Supervisor of the
project. (Not shown in the picture is
Norris Garrett, President of the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park.) The Veterans Park Committee greatly
appreciates these four young men for their time and support of our Park.
The
wonderful volunteer crew finished all except some black granite trim and it will
be added as soon as it is received.
Other additions in the area are being planned. Thanks to Home Depot for furnishing material
and to the Carroll EMC Round-Up Foundation for the grant which will enable us
to complete this project. The Park
Committee will meet October 23rd at the AG-ED Center, 6 P.M. Visitors are welcome to visit the meetings
and the Park anytime and mark your calendar for November 9th, when
the Park Committee will have a Veteran’s Day Program at the Park for the entire
area, at 10 A.M
