WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

“Wreaths Across America” was celebrated at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park by the McIntosh Trail Chapter of the Military Officers Association on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 12:00 Noon. The wreaths are placed in front of the flags of the six service branches plus one wreath in front of the POW/MIA Wall of Honor. Members of the Military Officers Association placed the wreaths and saluted the flags. Pictured from the left are

This program began in 1992 when Merrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine donated some 5,000 wreaths to decorate the graves at Arlington National Cemetery. Not only does he provide the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. Also most years groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one of the poorest parts of the state.

Violette Denney, as the Park treasurer, thanks you for your support – the Park is here because of you! Your contributions, donated items and volunteer hours total over one million dollars. So we can safely say we have a Million Dollar Park.

In DAR, we are all about service – one of our priorities is service to Veterans. Of course, this Memorial Park is special to me for lots of reasons. There are many of my family members and ancestors on these Walls of Honor.

As we dedicate the Bell Tower and Bell we know we have freedom because of the brave and courageous veterans who have taken their duty seriously and served their country with integrity and devotion. Veterans are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. They are our heroes. The bell as well as the entire park is our symbol of appreciation to our troops and veterans.

It does not matter what period of time, America’s veterans – past and present – remain number one. This is the “Land of the free and home of the brave” because of the veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.

May the sounds of freedom always remind us that Freedom is not free! We are blessed to have fine men and women who will suffer hardships, make sacrifices and perform unbelievable heroic acts for this sweet land of liberty. God bless America!

It is such a pleasure to be in this stunning park on this beautiful morning – let us please express our gratitude to the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Committee for their tireless work to establish this memorial! 20 Walls of Honor complete – working on the 21^stwall at this time- you should be very proud.

The word veteran may bring to mind someone who is now elderly and long retired who may have served in one of the world wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan. The new veteran is the man or woman next door who may be a homemaker, a college student, teacher, police officer, firefighter or a very active community volunteer.

Less than 1 percent of Americans serve in uniform today but they bear 100% of the burden of defending our nation. More than 2.2 million service members make up our all-volunteer force. Since September 11, 2011, over 2 million troops have deployed to overseas combat zones. All of these great Americans – at one point in time – signed a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount up to and including his/her life. How do you say “Thank You” for that? The best we can do is properly honor, recognize and support our veterans.

Veterans Day has been commemorated each year on November 11^th – the date that the guns fell silent at the end of World War I, the conflict that was supposed to be the “War to end all Wars.” In 1921, an unknown World War One American soldier was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. Similar ceremonies occurred in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (In England- Westminster Abbey; in France – Arc De Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11^th – giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War One fighting at 11 A.M. – November 11, 1918 (The 11^thhour of the 11^thday of the 11^thmonth). The day became known as “Armistice Day.” As we all know – only a few years after the Armistice Day holiday was proclaimed war once again broke out in Europe.

World War II – claimed the lives of more than 407,000 American service men and women. In order to pay tribute to those veterans that served our nation during World War II, a proposal was made in Congress to change “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to honor the veterans that served America in all wars. In 1954 President Eisenhower signed a bill that proclaimed November 11^thofficially as “Veterans Day.”

In every decade since freedom has been threatened and new generations of patriotic Americans have stepped forward to safeguard our nation’s freedom. This is truer now than ever before. Our nation pauses – as it should – in solemn remembrance and deep appreciation for their selfless sacrifice and service.

This veteran’s Day weekend, you should reflect in pride on the accomplishments of your fellow citizens for the veterans here today, your service and sacrifice has made the difference between living in a free world, versus living under tyranny. We commend your dedication, commitment and selflessness.

It is truly an honor to be with all of you in Carrollton this morning. Thank you for the invitation to speak on behalf of not only our nation’s veterans – but especially the veterans, friends and families that have graced us with their presence this morning. Thank you!

CHS STUDENTS VISIT THE PARK

Over 40 students and several teachers from the B.R.I.D.G.E. at Carrollton High School visited the Veterans Park for the first time to learn about the memorial and get a new appreciation of their freedom. The Site Coordinator Pamela Adams made the arrangements for two buses filled with ninth and tenth graders, in the after-school program, to meet Denney at the Park and see the Carroll County Memorial which they didn’t know existed. The visit was in preparation for an assignment related to Veteran’s Day. Bridge stands for Building Resources that Increase the Desire to Graduate for Everyone and it is sponsored by a state grant “21st Century Community Learning Centers” which provides two teachers for every 10 students. Any student in grades 9 – 12 can attend but the focus is on the 9th grade. The goal is to improve math and science scores on the CRCT.

BELL TOWER STANDS TALL...

Here you can see sections of the Round-A-Bout have been added. This picture was made from the Veterans' Park looking down on the highway in the area where the entrance to the Park will eventually be. Grass and straw have been added, etc.

In this picture made from the Highway you can see the Bell Tower, Soldiers, and the walled corner and if you look closely you will be able to see that steps have been added in the center of the walls - I'm not sure who will be going from the highway to the park, but now they will have steps. Regardless, they look nice!

This is the best close up of the Bell Tower that I could get and get the entire tower. I backed up against a Wall of Honor and did manage to get the Bell Tower standing straight. It was hard to get good pictures in the bright sun.

When I entered the park from the Health Department parking lot and walked toward the Walls of Honor I could hardly see the Bell Tower. Hugh Lee Young, a decorated World War II Veteran served as grand marshal at the Roopville, Georgia 26th Homecoming Festival and parade. Congratulation Hugh Lee! Driving the red convertible is Fred Lewis and you can tell by his smile that is is proud of the honor to be driving the grand marshal.

Marcella Correa led the Ithica Elementary School Choir in a musical prelude of patriotic songs. It was amazing how well the students performed considering the short time they had to prepare.

Bill Chappell, Chairman of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, read the Proclamation honoring the innocent citizens who became victims of an “unprovoked, senseless act of terrorism.” The display in front of the podium was provided by John Bassett who is chairman of the Americanism Committee of the American Legion Post #143.

The Flag and Wreath ceremony was performed by the Carroll County Sherriff and Fire Departments Honor Guard Teams and they were accompanied by the Carrollton Police Bag Pipers.

Mimi Gentry sang the National Anthem and led the group singing of God Bless America. Post 143 Commander, Don Levans (left) and Daniel Jackson salute during the singing of the National Anthem.

Sheriff Terry Langley was one of the speakers and he reminded everyone to remember the Scripture about returning “Good for Evil” during our times of remembrance. DanielJackson, President and CEO of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, is seated on the stage listening after he introduced the speakers.

GRANT RECEIVED FROM CARROLL EMC ROUND-UP FOUNDATION

A reception was held at the Carroll EMC building on Highway 113, August 18, 2011, to present the grants that had been approved. $100,000 was available to be distributed and $247,000 was requested. Needless to say we were thrilled that our request was honored and we received the funds needed to complete the lighting of our big polished black granite sign on Highway 16/Alternate 27, so it can be seen clearly at night. We are proud to honor our Veterans and active duty Troops! This light makes the Park Sign visible and enables everyone passing by to remember just how fortunate we are to have our freedom and to have willing people to give their time and talents (and sometimes their lives) to preserve that freedom.

We appreciate the Carroll EMC Round-Up program that made this grant possible. It shows how much we can accomplish when we work together.

NEW FEATURE AT THE PARK

We are planning to add a BELL TOWER to our Veterans Park. The pad is being created this week by Contractor Sammy Robinson. The pictures show the location - it will be near the entrance when the round-a-bout is completed and about 10-15 feet behind where the soldiers are now. It will look very similar to the pavilion - black with a black 20 inch bell.

On September 10^th, 2011, the American Legion Post 143, Carrollton, will be hosting a commemorative service at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park. This is the 10^thanniversary of the unprovoked and senseless act of terrorism. Four civilian aircraft were hijacked and crashed into New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania killing many innocent men, women and children.

Please join us and let the world know America is still the best Nation in the world and continue to pray for our country and our leaders. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

MEMORIAL DAY AT THE PARK

The Memorial Day ceremony was held at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, May 28th, 2011. Vice President Bill Cowart welcomed everyone and Chaplain Bruce Holley gave the invocation. Don Levans introduced Gordon Chandler the designer and creator of the soldier statues and shared some information about them. He dedicated them as follows, “On this day, May 28 the year of our Lord 2011 – we dedicate our “Three Soldier” Patrol – to the protection of the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park from here to eternity. Because of the outstanding support of Carroll County citizens, our public officials, civic organizations, families of veterans and veterans themselves, we are able to continue to add to what has become one of the most beautiful and meaningful Memorials in any County anywhere.”

President Norris Garrett introduced the speaker, Dr. Keith Berry and the following was taken from his notes: “First, I want to begin with a thank you. It is a great honor to be asked by the Veteran’s Memorial Park committee to stand before you today. But more importantly, on behalf of this crowd, on behalf of this community and on behalf of the men and women whose names are on these walls, I want to thank you for keeping the names, lives and sacrifices of America’s heroes forefront in our minds.

Honored veterans and those who love them – I stand before you a relatively young man. I have a few but ever increasing number of gray hairs and like Elihu in the book of Job, I know that my words should be the last to be uttered when compared to the older and wiser men and women of this audience. Still I appreciate this opportunity. I approach the next few minutes with caution, knowing that these thought were not mine ten years ago. And with the wisdom of years, they will probably not be mine ten years from now.

Before I get into my comments, I know that some of you want to hear a good story or two. A glimpse into my time in the military - I entered the military in a very odd way. Four years of medical school costs about a quarter of a million dollars, because I was about a quarter of a million dollars short, I asked Uncle Sam to foot the bill and I would serve as a combat physician for four years after my training. Well a funny thing happened while I was at Duke, I realized that while I enjoyed medicine, I really didn’t like doctors too much. So when it was time for me to go on active duty, I asked the Air Force if they had any other jobs they thought I might be good at. Unwilling to let me out of such a huge investment, they told me they would train me to be a flight surgeon and would let me be a F-15 backseater, if I would also take care of troops everyday once my flying duties were over.

Now listen, you can say all you want about government bureaucracy and waste, but they got their money out of me. Sometimes I would land in a country and be the only American or NATO doctor there. Well, you can do all that in your twenties.

Most of my good war stories are classified. Not that the government has it classified, but with my mother in the audience, I have classified much of it “need to know” and most of it she doesn’t need to know. Although I have been out of military service for over three years, I know she would have nightmares if she heard the story how during a thunderstorm one evening about two months after 9/11, 6 hours into a 8 hour sortie my frontseater and I were putting on our night vision goggles and got disoriented and flipped our F-15 only to discover we were racing at the ground with a few seconds to spare. Or if she knew my wife was 3 months pregnant at that time and I had no life insurance. I don’t think I should tell that one.

Instead I will tell you the story of the night we were flying in Operation Southern Watch. The first time I felt genuinely frightened. We were flying pretty low near the Iraqi border when lightening seemed to be sipping up from the ground. I had never seen Anti-Aircraft Artillery and wasn’t sure this was it, so I wasn’t too bothered by being shot at. All of a sudden our flight leader’s voice called out in my helmet “don’t worry that’s just soldiers shooting up in the air at random. It would have to be a real lucky shot in order to hit us.” I’m sure he had good intentions, I’m really certain he did. But he didn’t know that I had done some dove hunting and that I had killed a few doves in my day using the exact same marksmanship method. I had personal experience with the hitting flying objects with a random lucky shot and I knew how effective it could be and I didn’t want people shooting in my direction – aiming or random. Wow, I remember the adrenaline and the rush. Safe in my bed at night I thought war was fun.
At the dawn of my fourth decade I stopped flying and returned to the military medical system to complete my surgical training. This was during the initial build-up of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and was the first time that I saw the effects of war up close and personal. Daily soldiers would be evacuated to the Army Hospital with devastating eye and face injuries – many permanently blinded, most hopelessly disfigured by burns. I distinctly remember standing tall at the bedside of these fallen warriors at a stateside hospital. I would speak to patients and families confidently, enthusiastically, respectfully, with full military bearing. Then when my job was done I would walk slowly to the closest bathroom and sob like a child. Those months were some of the most challenging of my life. It was during this time – this difficult time – many of us caring for the war wounded began to contemplate the true meaning of sacrifice. Not just death, but giving up ones arms, legs, face, vision or entire way of life for one’s country. And now I have a very different perspective on how to honor the fallen.

Throughout history every society, every culture, every country has proclaimed special days to honor those who die “For King and Country.” But, I believe that America is different or should be different. Memorial Days, Veterans Day, Pearl Harbor day – these events – like their sister events in countries around the world are needed. But they cannot be the only remembrance of our veterans. In America, these holidays must be the beginning of our salute to our fallen. If Memorial Day is our only homage paid to the fallen heroes of our country then we are hypocrites. We are like the man in the old preacher’s story who shows up every Sunday morning throws a 5 in collection plate and then acts like a heathen the other 167 hours of the week. Memorial Day must be a symbol of how we live day after day, in a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made for each of us.

When I was a child I remember attending the “funeral” of a friend’s favorite pet. Words were spoken, songs were sung, and the gravesite was marked with a wooden headstone so the child could visit. With time, the visits were less frequent, the dog forgotten and slowly nearby woods swallowed the marker with weeds and overgrowth. Now, compare this with the death of an old oak tree. No plaque, no marker, no eulogy – just hundreds and hundreds of acorns. But, over time that great oak is better memorialized by the growth of those left behind. In America, the death and disfigurement of our warriors cannot be adequately memorialized by plaques and pomp, by VA benefits and a few tax breaks. It must be seen in the daily lives and the growth of the citizenry that remain.

So today, I view us, each of us, as acorns and saplings of the strong oak-like warriors whose names are written around us. Honor them with granite and brass. That’s okay. But more importantly, honor them by becoming like them. Honor them by emulating the lives they gave up. Each person who has laid down his life for this country whether male or female; rich or poor; black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Middle-Eastern, Native American – each had one quality that I dare you to grow in your personal life! A sacrificial spirit!

I grew up with the great oral traditions of the south. I know stories about the great depression, WW II maneuvers, ration stamps, victory gardens passed down from my great grandmother and grandparents. I know my grandmother cooked breakfast, helped in the barn, caught a ride into town, walked a mile to the factory, worked a full shift, walked a mile to catch a ride home, made dinner, milked the cows and raised twin daughters and helped care for parents, in-laws and her brothers and sisters – this day to day sacrifice was the NORM for her generation. People were honored and celebrated for their sacrifice.

In college my friends would make fun of me because if I liked someone, I would always seem to say that person was a “hard-worker.” It was the highest compliment I would hear in my family – “he’s a good guy, a real hard worker.” But today we do not see that. Or if we see this “hard working” side of American life, it is not lifted up, it is not honored, it’s considered sad. “She worked hard her whole life.”

Today, the honored, the celebrated, the heroes of American culture are the ballplayers, the singers, the actors, CEOs, moneymakers, the movers and shakers. Today the honored are not the ones who GIVE honor or sacrifice, but the ones who DEMAND honor and sacrifice from others. Sacrifice has become a dirty word in America. Conversations about sacrifice are relegated to churches, mosques, synagogues and local service clubs – and even they have a hard time getting their members to serve. It seems each person feels they sacrifice enough already and that what is needed is more sacrifice from others!

Today, I want to inspire you (not y’all) but you, and you, and you to give more! Give more to your country, give more to each other. Take back the honor and satisfaction that can only be found in the hard work of sacrifice and service to others. Thankfully, most of us will not be required to give the sacrifice made by the people on these walls. But if you want to honor these men and women by emulating their lives you must become the sacrificial leaders of this community. So how is this done?

First sacrificial leadership is personal. It cannot be imitated it cannot be delegated. It must be demonstrated. It cannot be done from the ivory tower of good ideas or good intentions. It cannot be done from the 18th or 19th hole at the local course; it cannot be done from fishing boats or fancy parties in the name of charity. Sacrificial leadership is like war. It puts you in dirty, strange places with people unlike yourself. Sacrifice is by definition uncomfortable. The smells can be nasty and the sounds haunting. It will stir your conscious and may cause sleepless nights and disturbing dreams. And when you do it right, regardless of your military bearing, you will find yourself weeping for those in need.

As Americans (especially Southern Americans) we pride ourselves on our tradition and ethic of liberty, justice, hard work, and hospitality. Our history is full of barn raisings, quilting bees, working fields, and neighbor helping neighbor. Ladies and gentlemen, in today’s economy and today’s moral vacuum there is more need of neighborly kindness and service than ever before. If you want the America of today and tomorrow to be better than the America of the past, if you want to truly honor the sacrifices of fallen warriors, then make America better – by serving.
Right now there are people stepping up to serve right here in this community. Because of the job I have, I meet about 5,000 people every year. Like the veterans I used to care for every day, each of my patients has a story to tell. And some of their stories of service are inspiring; grandmothers and grandfathers who are parenting for a second time, unwilling to let their grandchildren slip through the cracks. They forgo retirement to sacrifice for their family and for this nation.

Foster parents and adoptive parents who, for the sake of the nation, create a family to nurture unwanted children, preparing them to be givers to our society and not takers. Did you know here in Carroll County there are wives and mothers who befriend and help single moms to serve as mentors and advocates for them; teachers who quietly organize food and supplies for the children in their classes who would undoubtedly be hungry during the summer break. There are school children who make potholders, lemonade stands, and grow small gardens so they can give of the fruit of their labor to the local soup kitchen. There are men who use their weekends to care for the widows near them; retirees who meet daily with the poor and homeless to train them for a job. These opportunities are visible all around you. If you care enough to see them!
Can you read and write? You can find many children in this community who need an adult who will take an interest in them. Meet with them two hours a week; mentor them; tutor them, show them that you expect great things from them. You can show them that they are valuable because someone on these walls was willing to give their life for them and you are willing to give a part of your life for them, too.

Have you retired from your job? Well you cannot retire from being a sacrificial leader! Discover those struggling around you. Many feel hopeless, many feel helpless or worthless. Get involved in their life. Bring them to this park and explain they are not worthless. That this airman, this Marine, this soldier, that sailor; men and women who never knew them were willing to lay down their lives so THEY could have freedom, THEY could have opportunity. All Americans have value because of the price that has been paid for them.

Ladies and gentlemen, with time, this memorial park will be no more. The granite will break and the brass will tarnish. Raised letters will be weathered flat. That is what happens with matter and things over time. But the human spirit is so very different.

Let us strive to create memorials that are enduring – lives inspired by sacrifice and willing to pay that forward by serving others. Let us produce a citizenry that demands service and excellence from the future generations by demonstrating excellence and showing today’s children that sacrifice is the American way.

Goodness, self-respect, self-sacrifice – these fleeting values must be the pillars and backbone of American culture. We are losing these qualities. Not because our laws aren’t tough enough, but because our children are not seeing these qualities in us. Morality cannot be legislated, it must be demonstrated. 3 GIs Come Home!

Pictured on the left are Gordon Chandler with Larry Jennings and one of the GIs returning to the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park.

The last of the three returning GIs is being set in place using the heavy equipment moving apparatus belonging to Gordon Chandler.

Several years ago Gordon Chandler loaned the Veterans Memorial Park his three statues and they stayed at the Park until he needed them for a display at another location. Chandler designed and created these soldiers from scrap medal from the Lawler Hosiery Mill. They have traveled from California on the West Coast to Massachusetts on the East Coast and several points in between for various displays. Recently they were located in Marietta, Georgia.

The CCVMP Committee voted to purchase the statues and they will be installed in the Veteran’s Park permanently. They will be “on guard” for viewing at the Memorial Day Program on May 28th, 2011. The program will begin at 10 A.M. and will feature Dr. Keith Berry as speaker. Plaques for Veterans and bricks for everyone are available by calling 770-836-1111 or 770-832-0671.

CCVMP RECEIVED USA FLAG FROM WOODMEN OF THE WORLD, LODGE 100

The Veterans Park Committee met at the AG/ED Center on April 25, 2011, and had 26 members present. President Norris Garrett conducted the meeting and led the discussion about the upcoming Memorial Day Program at the Park on May 28, 2011, Saturday, 10 A.M. Garrett said that all the inscribed bricks will be in place and the latest contributors of $500 or more will have their names on the Contributor Wall of Honor before the Memorial Day Ceremony.

The Woodmen of the World, Lodge 100, presented an 8 foot by 12 foot USA Flag to the Park and it will be flown over the Park for the first time on May 28. Everyone was excited to see that it was “MADE IN THE USA.” We appreciate all the patriotic things this organization does especially for the contributions to the Park. A bronze plaque honoring a special group of Veterans was cleaned and installed under a tree at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park. The inscription is as follows:

Sam Pyle said, “The small bronze plaque attached to a piece of granite was originally placed by unknown persons at a tree in the old Chandler Park on US 27 North in Carrollton, apparently in 1973. When the park was remolded several years ago, the tree was cut down and the plaque disappeared. Bill Maddox remembered the plaque being in the park and discussed it with me. I checked around and discovered the City of Carrollton had done the work in the park. I discovered the plaque stored in the former Southwire hanger at the old airport site near Lake Carroll in 2007.The hanger was being used as a maintenance area by the City of Carrollton .I explained I was with the Veterans Park and The City gave the plaque to me for the Veterans Park to use……” Our Veterans Memorial Park helps us remember and honor our Carroll County natives who paid the ultimate price to protect U.S. freedom. We must not forget those who died in past wars and reflect on the humanity of the after effects and to admire all soldiers who have the courage to risk their lives to save others. Currently we are raising funds to maintain our park and we still have plaques for Veterans and bricks for everyone that can be purchased to enhance the 19 Walls of Honor located there. White Marble Plaques for Veterans connected to Carroll County are available for $300. Brick to line the walkways only cost $50 each and you can have anyone’s name inscribed on the brick. ACTIVE DUTY VETERAN VISITS THE PARK ON CHRISTMAS DAY

On Christmas day an active duty veteran visited the Park – 2Lt Matt Chapman, USAF, stationed at Tyndall AFB, Florida, near Panama City, Florida. The snow added the finishing touch needed to make this a very special tree with a very special message for all our veterans. You are remembered and appreciated!

Scouts Honor Veterans...The Three Rivers District Boy Scouts of America are honoring ALL veterans, both active and retired from ALL branches of the service who reside in Carroll County, during the month of December by placing tongue depressors with the names of service men and women written on them. These names were then placed on a Christmas tree in the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park.

All veterans were invited to participate by having names written and hung on the tree. The initial ceremony was on Saturday, December 4th at 10 A.M. for Carroll County Veterans. Every Saturday during the month of December additional names were placed on the tree. The recognition event ended on Friday, December 24th.

Three Rivers District scouts are doing this to honor those that cannot be home during the Holiday Season. Jeff Anderson, Three Rivers District Historian, was the project officer for the scouts. A total of 1,105 names were listed on the tongue depressors by Jeff Anderson. He hung them on the Christmas tree that he placed in the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park during December 2010.

Saturday, November 6, 2010, was one of the coldest days at the park but the program was one of the best. Every participant did an outstanding job and we learned a lot from our speaker. Lt. Col. Weitzel closed her very informative remarks with the “Marine’s Prayer” which is printed here.

“ Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. CCVMP Committee Honors UWG Student

DAVID J. PRITCHARD (Jordan) was presented an Appreciation Plaque “For Outstanding Service to the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park – 2010” by the park president Norris Garrett.

The Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Committee met October 25th , and President Norris Garrett called the meeting to order at 7 P.M. Chaplain Bill Cowart opened the meeting with prayer and Hugh Lee Young led the Pledge of Allegiance to the USA flag. Garrett introduce David Jordan Pritchard and explained that he is a student at the UWG and he has been working at the Park to repair the walkways – the wooden strips between the sections of cement are being replaced with gravel and sand to eliminate safety hazards. Pritchard volunteered to work at the park doing anything that needed to be done as a service project for one of his classes.

NORTH POINT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY VISITS THE VETERANS PARK

About 200 students from North Point Christian Academy gathered at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park, around the flag pole in the center of the park. Pastor Rodney Agan led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America followed by a prayer for our country, veterans, troops and students. This was the first stop for the students as they began a day of Community Service. There were numerous teachers, parents and others along with the children and Randy Bradford, who is the Administration Pastor and organizer of the days’ activities. The students were challenged to find Veterans on the Walls of Honor with their last name. Many had not visited the park before and were surprised to find so many impressive features and delighted to know that they could buy a brick and have their name inscribed on it. Commission Chairman Bill Chappell welcomed everyone and Park Committee Officer Violette Denney pointed out the various Walls of Honor and answered questions.

This adds 48 more Veterans and their military records to our Memorial, making the total of 912 Veterans. The Veterans entered the July 4th parade in downtown Carrollton in style this year, thanks to arrangements made by Larry Jennings. Walker Cadillac Pontiac Buick GMC furnished a new GMC truck and Home Depot loaned the new trailer. Susan Mabry, Executive Assistant of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, is shown presenting Norris Garrett, President of the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park, with a check that was approved by the Commissioners at their last meeting by a vote of 6 -0. One commissioner was absent from the meeting. This county park is definitely an asset to our area. The Park was recognized recently by the Chamber of Commerce Environmental Projects Committee for a Beautification Award. The most important thing is that it honors and recognizes our many Veterans and Active Duty Troops and shows our appreciation for their service. The Park Committee continues to raise funds to expand and improve the appearance of the Park.

WOMAN HERO RECEIVES HER MEDAL

June Drew, one of the first women pilots to fly a U.S. Military Aircraft received her Congressional Medal on July 5th, 2010, at the Veterans Memorial Park, in the pavilion, near the newly installed and landscaped Women’s Memorial Wall. It was presented by Violette Denney (right) and Tina Clune (left), members of the Abraham Baldwin Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. It was a surprise to Mrs. Drew and she said that she was going to put it under her pillow but her daughter wants to frame it for display. The wording on the medal is “WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS” and “1942 – 1944.” On the reverse side it reads “THE FIRST WOMEN IN HISTORY TO FLY AMERICAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT” and “ACT OF CONGRESS 2009.” These women were extremely brave and wanted to serve their country when they were needed.

This beautification award is especially meaningful since it was a long time coming... the landscaping at the park was a huge challenge and a certain amount of the development had to be completed before it could even be started, since heavy equipment is required to install the walls and other features. We appreciate all the help received from many groups and individuals, which made this award possible. The appearance of the Park is important because it is our Symbol of Appreciation to our Veterans and active duty troops. It was good to have the Award sign posted in the park during the Memorial Day Ceremony. A picture of the sign and the plaque are shown below.

Larry Jennings proudly stands with June Drew as she is recognized for her service during WW II as a WASP - Women Airforce Service Pilot. They flew planes state side so the men would be free to fulfill other necessary duties during the war.

Over 600 gathered at the park today, Saturday, May 29, 2010, and were blessed to hear two outstanding veterans speak about our great nation and their military experiences. Pictured above (l. to r.) is Wayne Waddell, John Burson, and Norris Garrett. All those who participated were absolutely wonderful and celebrated the lives of our veterans, both past and present, especially those who are honored at the park on the KIA, MIA, and POW walls.

President Norris Garrett dedicated the Women's Memorial Wall and recognized WW II WASP June Drew. She received a standing ovation and round of applause. Thanks to everyone who attended and helped to recognize the many men and women who have given both time and talent, up to and including their very lives.

SMITH PROMOTES CCVMP IN THE OLYMPICS

Dr. Will Smith, who is known to his family and friends as Will or brother, entered the DeKalb County Senior Olympics on Saturday, May 15, 2010, and won two first place gold medals and one second place silver medal. In the track and field events Smith won gold in the 1.5 mile walk and the 25 yard dash and silver for the football toss.

Smith was born in Carrollton 73 years ago and grew up in Polk County. In high school he participated in track and field and played football. While serving in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1962 he competed on a boxing team and was a middleweight champion while serving in Korea. He received his basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. and completed his heavy weapons training at Ft. Hood, Texas, before going to Korea for a year and a half. After leaving the Army, he attended nursing school and became a licensed practical nurse in 1968 and he worked at Battey State Hospital, which is now Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital. Later he worked for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at the hospitals in Decatur and Augusta. It was at the hospital in Decatur that he learned about the DeKalb County Senior Olympics.

After Smith attended Covington Theological Seminary in Ft. Oglethorpe and earning his doctorate of ministries degree, he was pastor of Bethlehem Temple Church in Carrollton from 1970 to 2005. He still works out every day, even though he is a cancer survivor and he has lost some of his hearing and vision ability, and suffers from knee injuries from his days in the military.

The Veterans Park is important to Will and his wife Annie. They have continuously paid their dues and Will has served as Chaplain or Assistant Chaplain for years. They have two daughters: Camilla and Theresa; two sons: William Parks and Michael and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM - MAY 29TH, 2010

The Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park will have a Memorial Day Program at the Park on Saturday, May 29th, 2010, at 10 A.M. The Park is located at 1050 Newnan Rd., Carrollton, GA 30116 (It is near the intersection of Hwy. 166 and Hwy. 16) The featured speaker will be Dr. John H. Burson, III, Ph.D., M.D., an otolaryngologist, president of Chattahoochee Healthcare, LLC, chairman of the Board of Directors of Tanner Health System, and is a licensed professional engineer, a retired military officer, a pilot and avid collector of vintage aircraft, the father of four, and an active community leader and volunteer. Retired from the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Burson has returned for short periods of active duty and served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

The latest feature to be added to the Park is a Women's Memorial Wall which is six feet tall by 24 feet wide and is covered with military women images. Traditionally, women in the military have had to be either a nurse or a clerk. Now, we have a female four-star general and our women active-duty troops serve in all capacities. This Memorial Wall will be dedicated during the program by the Park President Norris A. Garrett.

WASP June Drew visits Women's Memorial

We are fortunate to know Veteran June S. Drew, WWII Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP). She joined after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. On July 1, 2009 the President signed legislation that would award these women the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest civilian award. This is exactly the kind of service we are honoring! Violette Denney said, “It was my privilege to escort Mrs. Drew to the Veterans Park to see the Women’s Memorial when it was completed and make her picture. She was excited and complimented the committee for remembering her is such a wonderful way. She stated that she could hardly wait to show her family the beautiful park.”

addition any time.

Woodman of the World Lodge 100, Carrollton, presented the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park with a large celebration USA Flag to be flown at the park. Presenting the flag to President Norris Garrett is Melba Simpson and James Upchurch.

On Monday, February 22nd the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Committee met at Horizon Bay and enjoyed dinner together. Community Relations Director Jenny Leibowitz welcomed everyone and showed the Veterans that they are appreciated for serving our great country. The regular business meeting was held after dinner with President Norris Garrett presiding. He introduced the Park Contractor Sam Robinson, who reported on the progress being made on the Women's Memorial Wall. He explained the detailed process which is required to get the design satisfactorily completed. He anticipates that it will be finished and ready for installation within a couple of weeks. The weather will determine the time required for installation. We will be hoping for some dry sunny days.

The Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Committee met at the Old Oak Mountain School in the American Legion Room with 28 members present. President Norris Garrett welcomed everyone and Chaplain Bill Cowart opened the meeting with prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Hugh Lee Young. The regular business meeting followed including committee reports.

The Officers for the New Year were installed and they are as followed: President, Norris Garrett; Vice Present, Sam Pyle; Secretary, Janet Head; Treasurer, Violette Denney; Directors, Bill Head, Frank Searcy, Donald Levans, and Carolyn Stone (not present).

CFWG HONORS VETERANS WITH GRANT

The Veterans Memorial Park Committee received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of West Georgia to help build the Women’s Memorial Wall at the park. The total cost will be about $25,000 and this grant will be a significant part. The wall will be made from polished black granite to match the KIA Walls. It is anticipated the wall will be finished and installed early next year. The foundation is complete and our order has been confirmed. The holidays have caused some delay at the factory. We are grateful to have the Community Foundation on our team. They are a pleasure to work with.

"Carrollton County Veterans Day
7 November 2009

Welcome to this Veterans Day ceremony of remembrance and tribute. It is my honor to share in this important celebration with you.

So what is a veteran? A Veteran is a man and woman who served in the military (U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard) in times of war or peace. On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the men and women who in defense of our freedom have bravely worn the uniform of the United States. From the fields and forests of war-torn Europe to the jungles of Southeast Asia, from the deserts of Iraq to the mountains of Afghanistan, brave patriots have protected our Nation's ideals, rescued millions from tyranny, and helped spread freedom around the globe.

This is a time to set aside the cares of the world and worries of the future – a time instead to look back in gratefulness to those fallen heroes of our country and those that still serve. It is this service and sacrifice that makes it possible for us to be here today, celebrating in freedom and safety the spirit and resolve of our great country.

Let us then recall why we celebrate Veterans Day. Our country sets aside two days a year to honor those who have served in her armed forces. Though similar, they differ importantly. In November, on shining, bright days like this one when yellow leaves hang on the trees, we mainly celebrate our living veterans, those who have, and still do, place themselves between our loved ones and war’s destruction. So it’s called Veterans Day.

The second day of tribute is in Spring –– Memorial Day, when we pause to remember and grieve our honored dead.

The WOT, this persistent conflict, is one of the most dangerous periods in our history. At this very moment, 260,000 Soldiers are deployed or “forward stationed” in nearly 80 countries overseas. Close to 5,000 have been killed and over 15K injured. The Ga Guard has deployed over 10,000 soldiers since 9/11. We currently have over 3,100 Ga guardsmen deployed today, most in Afghanistan. In addition to the 2800 soldiers with the 48th, we also have a Chinook unit(Savannah)and an Engineer route clearance company(Swainsboro) in Afghanistan. In Iraq, we have a Med Co out of Marietta) and an MP Co(Monroe).

The toll has been heavy, and personal. Georgia has lost 8 of its sons in the last 5 months. There were 7 children of National Guard soldiers that did not celebrate Father’s Day this year for the first time. We buried our latest fallen hero, SSG Alex French, on Oct 10th. I presented a flag to each of SSG French’s Children, his 5 yr old twins, Alex and Alexis, and his 2 yr old daughter Madison. The memory of those children, holding the folded stars and stripes, is seared on my heart.

Three weeks ago, I had the good fortune to be with the people of Dalton as they celebrated Liberty Week and culminated with the ringing of the Liberty Bell. It made me realize that we are so very blessed to live where we do. Many of us have adopted this land as home, or had ancestors that made that decision years ago. My grandparents had the courage to leave Italy in the early 1900s, before WWI and the depression, with little money in their pockets and no security in their future. My dad’s parents emigrated from Naples to NYC and my mom’s parents came from Sicily and settled in Amsterdam, NY. It’s hard to fathom the risk that they took, the sacrifice they made, to create a better life for their children, and their grandchildren. I am truly grateful to them and owe them much. My grandparents, and many of yours, had the courage to break from the past and brave the dangers and loneliness of a strange land where they couldn’t even speak the language, because they sought freedom from oppression. They sought Liberty!
I want my 3 daughters to inherit this gift of Liberty. And just as importantly, I want them to appreciate this gift, because its preservation comes at a high price.

Freedom is not free! The men and women of the United States Military have freely chosen to protect us and preserve this rich legacy to our children. It’s the hope, faith, and trust that I see in my daughter’s eyes that inspires me to keep soldiering.

It is a gift that can never be reciprocated in full, and only asks for remembrance in return.
So this morning, let us reflect on the common thread, the character of the generations of brave military who have put their “boots on the ground” in defense of American ideals.

On behalf of over one million service members and especially our citizen soldiers, thank you for your continued support. God bless all of our military and their families and may he continue to bless our great nation.

WORK AT THE PARK CONTINUES...

The finished walk ways look like this and they connect to the existing walks.

Pictured are Contractor Sammy Robinson and his crew, Murry Smith and Shane Kirker, as they pour the cement for walkways and foundation pad for the Women’s Memorial Wall.

The Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Committee added 95 feet of sidewalk, four feet wide, and the foundation pad for the future Women’s Memorial Wall. This additional sidewalk will connect the Women’s Wall to the existing walk ways including the area where the Jones Memorial bench is located. The pad for the wall is 16 feet long with a spot two feet by three feet full of metal rebar and cement. The pad will have stainless steel rods into the cement and the black granite wall for support and protection from high winds.

Construction of the Women’s Wall will begin as soon as funds are received. We are in dire need of approximately $25,000 and we solicit your help. If you would like to help us, remember we are a 501 (c) (3) organization, which means your donations are tax deductible. This is an excellent way to honor our women who have not always received a fair shake in their military service to their country. They deserve this recognition on behalf of all women. Visit the park and view this addition any time at your convenience. The Veterans Day program is scheduled for the Veterans Park on November 7, 2009, at 10 A.M. The Veterans Memorial Park Committee met August 25, 2009, at Horizon Bay for the August dinner meeting. President Norris Garrett opened the meeting by welcoming the 34 members present. Bill Cowart gave the invocation and blessing for the meal. Jenny Leibowitz, Director of Community Relations for Horizon Bay, greeted the members as they arrived and then she and her assistants served a delicious chicken dinner, complete with salad and dessert. The Veterans appreciated the special treatment and enjoyed the time of fellowship.

Norris Garrett introduced the Park contractor, Sam Robinson, and he presented information about the next feature to be added to the Park. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Burson were recognized and thanked for their continued loyal support of the Park. Dr. and Mrs. T. M. Martin reported that they had visited the Veterans Park recently and were surprised at the progress that has been made. They were very complimentary about how well it looks. Garrett expressed his appreciation to the Martins for their contributions to the Park.

It was announced that the Veterans Day Program is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 10 A.M. at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park. Chairman Larry Jennings is working on the ceremony and a special speaker has already been reserved. Every patriotic citizen is welcome to come to show their gratitude to our Veteran heroes who have protected our freedom.

Wayne Waddell spoke to us about his military career and some of the experiences he had in Vietnam as a prisoner of war. He reminded everyone that Memorial Day is a special time to show our appreciation and teach our children what true patriotism really is.

Jim Crawford came from his retirement home in Florida for this special occasion and dedicated the new Pavilion to all the mothers, fathers, sons and daughters of Veterans who have served their country, especially those Killed-In-Action who gave the untimate sacrifice. May we never forget - freedom is not free.

Mimi Gentry saved the day by singing the National Anthem. It is wonderful to have talent and even more wonderful when you use it without hesitation. Thank you, Mimi.

Today (March 22, 2009) we observe a grave marker dedication ceremony for James Donald Denney. Donald was a charter member of the Casimir Pulaski Chapter here in Carrollton. He wasa recipient of the prestigious Liberty Medal for the recruitment of new members into the Society. Donald was a Veteran, a World War II veteran of the United States Navy having served in the Asian theatre.

Donald was raised here in Carroll County and grew up during the Depression. Those that bemoan our current economic plight could have learned valuable lessons from Donald. He grew up in the time when there were no bail outs, but there were pitch-ins, you had to pitch-in and work, help put food on the table, help make any money at all and save pennies, not dollars. He was a member of what has been called the Greatest Generation; a generation saddled with the depression and thrust into a two front World War. This generation set the bar for people around the world for making sacrifices to do the right things. This generation had so much to gain and so little to lose because they had very little to start with; it is because of them that our country has experienced a life style over the last 50 years that is unparalleled in history.

Donald had his priorities in order, he was a devoted Christian, he was a devoted family man, who loved his wife, his sons, his daughters-in-law, and his grandchildren, and he loved his country and was proud of his service and his family’s service to this country. He qualified for SAR by his ancestor Edward Denney of South Carolina, and later in life Donald was very active in the Veteran’s Memorial here in Carroll County.

Those of us in the Pulaski Chapter knew Donald as a quiet man, who was passionate about his faith, his family and his country. He was a true member of the Greatest Generation and was a quiet, humble man who worked hard and was a role model for so many.

To the Denney family, thank you for sharing Donald with us, for allowing us to learn from him, and to see a man that not only talked the talk, but also walked the walk.

HORIZON BAY HONORS VETERANS WITH DINNER

The Veterans Park Committee meeting was held at Horizon Bay on February 23rd. President Norris Garrett presided and there were 32 in attendance. Community Relations Director Jenny Leibowitz, General Manager Peggy Peters, and Food Service Manager James Morris did a fantastic job honoring our Veterans with a delicious dinner. The Veterans and their guests were seated in the visitors dining room and were served like Heroes, which they are! Following dinner the group moved to the front sitting area around the fireplace for the regular meeting. Committee reports were given and plans for the Memorial Day service on May 23rd, at 10 a.m., at the Veterans Park, were discussed including a special treat by a PARACHUTE JUMPER GROUP (more about this will be announced later).

MORE LANDSCAPING AT THE PARK...

Sandra Vierling, landscape architect, is surveying the Veterans Park and preparing to suggest a variety of plants and shrubs to enhance our new walkway and pavilion area. The rain and warm temperatures should make them grow and be ready for the Memorial Day service on May 23rd, 2009. The park committee appreciates the volunteer service that Sandra is providing. The cemented area is where one of the polished black granite benches will be located.

FIRE POWER NANDINA BUSHES ~ WOW!

Jim Carnes and his helper are busy planting 47 “Fire Power Nandina” bushes. The green leaves shift to a brilliant red color as summer shifts to fall and maintains this hue throughout the winter months. The Nandina will grow in direct or partial sunlight but will be noticeably brighter and lush with the greater amount of sun. These were chosen because they are hardy and disease resistant. The bush needs minimal care, adding to its value as both a landscape element and decorative plant. Also, variegated Liriope (grass-like leaves with cream-yellow edges and purple-blue flowers) was planted which will bloom all summer. Straw was added to cover the ground around the plants. In the background is the pavilion and beyond the sidewalk leads to the parking area. From the pavilion the walkway go to the fountain, then continues to the Walls of Honor. Plan to visit the park soon and mark your calendar for the May 23rd Memorial Day Program.

This week new sidewalks are being installed, going from the parking lot to the pavilion - thanks to the generosity and help of several patriotic citizens. Once this is completed we will add some beautiful polished black granite benches and more plants and scrubs. The park should be springing into full bloom in a few weeks and ready to welcome our veterans and friends. The park is open everyday and it is a symbol of our appreciation to our troops and veterans.

The Veterans Park Committee met Monday, January 26, 2009, for the monthly meeting. President Norris Garrett presided, Chaplain Bill Cowart offered the invocation, and Hugh Lee Young led in the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were presented followed by committee reports. The Memorial Day program is being scheduled for Saturday, May 23rd and contacts are being made for a speaker and person to dedicate the Pavilion. Next month’s meeting will be on February 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. with dinner being served by Horizon Bay. Merrill Gardens is now Horizon Bay and is located at 530 Northside Drive, Carrollton.

ENGRAVING CAUGHT UP AT THE PARK...

The work crews have been working to get all the engraving caught up. All the backlog engraving at the Memorial Park has been done, including the Bricks, Platinum Sponsors, Silver Sponsors, Bronze Sponsors on the Black Granite Contributor Wall of Honor. VETERANS DAY PROGRAM November 8, 2008

We will have a Veterans Day program November 8, 2008, at 10 AM, at the Veterans Memorial Park. The featured speaker will be Major Jean Youngblood. FOUNDATION PAD FOR THE PAVILION

Sammy Robinson is paving with bricks between the sidewalks that connect the Walls of Honor and Fountain Sections of the park to the pad (foundation) for the Pavilion. Currently we are raising funds to construct the Pavilion and work will continue as money is received. It is estimated that it will cost $40,000 and it will be built with materials to enhance the existing park. Call 770-836-1111 for more information.

VETERANS PARK GETTING READY FOR WINTER

Landscaping at the park anticipating winter weather - 81 bales of pine straw were placed around all the flower beds, shrubbery and trees. Rye grass was planted to keep the area looking nice and green throughout the winter months. Donations earmarked for landscaping would be greatly appreciated - remember all donations are tax deductible under the 501 (C) (3) section of the IRS Code. Here is a re-enlistment ceremony from Baghdad on the 4th of July. Somehow this did not make it onto network news broadcasts. This is a picture of what is reputedly the 'largest re-enlistment ceremony ever held in military history'. The ceremony was held July 4, 2008 at Al Faw Palace, Baghdad , Iraq . General Petraeus officiated.

MG Cookbooks for sale to benefit the Veterans Park

The wonderful cookbook, created by the Carroll County Master Gardeners, has been reordered and they can be purchased or picked up to sell at Norris Garrett's office at 110 Newnan Road. Mr. Garrett asked that you call him after 10 A. M., at 770-836-1111 to be sure that he is in his office before coming. The cookbooks have nearly 600 great recipes and the cover is a work of ART by Alan Kuykendall. All the profit will be used at the park toward a pavilion. Carolyn Stone and Violette Denney (above) will assist with keeping control of the inventory.

Georgia Master Gardener Association Grant

This is a special thank you to the Georgia Master Gardener

Association for the grant funds to provide landscaping in the

fountain area. This grant along with the other patriotic

groups and citizens made it possible to add this feature to our

Memorial Park. We are grateful for the opportunity to show

our appreciation to the Veterans listed on our

Killed In Action and other Walls of Honor. We are currently

PEOPLE'S PARADE GRAND MARSHALL

The Carrollton Evening Sertomo Club honored the CCVMP

by selecting them to be the "Grand Marshall" of the 2008

4th of July "People's Parade." US Marine Gunnery Sgt. Bill Head

was chosen to represent the Park and ride in the lead vehicle.

He was a veteran of the battle of Iwo Jima.

Sandra Vierling, a landscape architect, received recognition for the many hours she devoted to designing the landscaping and marking the locations at the park. The appreciation plaque was presented to her by President Norris Garrett.

Norris Garrett presented Sherrie D'Hollosy an appreciation plaque for her service and dedication to the landscaping of the veterans park. Sherrie helped to raise funds and recruited many others to assist in the development of the landscaping.

There were 23 members present for the regular business meeting and President Norris Garrett presided following the pledge of allegiance and prayer. He recognized the two members for outstanding service and dedication with a brief summary of their activities.

FOUNTAIN CEMENT SHELL COMPLETED!

Pat Burns from the Smyrna Museum, Smyrna, Georgia, visited the

Veterans Park and Norris Garrett gave her the "Grand Tour,"

explaining the various Walls of Honor.

The cement shell for the fountain has been completed.

We will have to wait for it to dry before the next step.

PARK FOUNTAIN GROUND BREAKING

This picture was made by Norris Garrett on February 29, 2008 as the ground was being broken for the fountain at the Veterans Memorial Park. When it is finished there will be walkways around it and they will be connected to the existing walks through the Walls of Honor.

National Arbor Day Celebration at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park.

National Arbor Day was celebrated at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park with the planting of fifteen trees Tuesday, February 19, 2008. The trees were donated by the University of West Georgia Arboretum. The trees were selected by James Hembree, Grounds Supervisor of the University of West Georgia. Hembree is also a certified arborist. The heavy equipment and labor required for digging holes for the trees were provided by Kent Johnston of the City of Carrollton Parks and Recreation Department.

Sandra Vierling, a landscape architect, who is responsible for the landscape design for Phase II of the Park, was also present and participated with the planting.

This was truly a joint community effort with the Carroll County Master Gardeners, the Junior Master Gardeners, Veterans Memorial Park Committee, Girls Scout Troup 300 of Carrollton, and the Girl Scout Troup 316 of Villa Rica helping plant the trees.

A new Wall of Honor has just been installed as has a new granite sign for the Park. Plaques are now being acquired for an additional wall. Any one interested in acquiring a plaque can call 770-836-1111, 770-834-7085 or 770-832-0671. A water feature is in the early stages of being installed in Phase II.

It is wonderful that our community comes together to honor our veterans who gave or were willing to give so much for our freedom. Our Park is rapidly becoming the pride of West Georgia.

Walls 15 and 16 in progress! We anticipate that these walls will be finished by the 1st of March. There are 96 veterans with their service record on these Walls of Honor. This makes a total of 768 veterans being honored for their service, in addition to the ones Killed In Action, which are listed on other special walls. Work is in progress on Walls 17 and 18. The USS GEORGIA is coming home!

Carroll County's USS Georgia Flag Ceremony took place today, Friday, January 25, 2008, at the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park. Pictured from left to right: Chairman Carroll County Commissioners Bill Chappell, District 3 Commissioner Bill Head, Petty Officer II Eric Bell, Executive Director Chattahoochee-Flint Regional Development Center, Navy League Steve Adams.

The 560 foot trident submarine will be stationed at the naval submarine base at Kings Bay. The ship has been retrofitted to accommodate tomahawk missiles with enough room for a special operations platform. The conversion happened over the last two years in Norfolk, Virginia. The Return to Service Committee led the effort to have the ship stationed in Kings Bay, Georgia. To commemorate the return of the USS Georgia, all of the State's 159 counties are signing an official log entry that will become a permanent part of the ship's records. Georgia's Regional Development Centers are coordinating the commemoration.

The president of the Carrollton Junior Woman's Club, Dee Hull, presented the Veterans Memorial Park President, Roger Knowles, with a check for $6,000. The check represented the proceeds of the 5th Annual Cross Country, 5 K Autumn Run 2007, which was held on Sunday, November 11th, 2007, in front of the Carrollton Elementary School. Those present from the Woman's Club were Dee Hull, Kelsey Johnson, Chloe Harden and Gail Cantrell; and those from the Carroll County Veterans Memorial Park Committee were Roger Knowles, Norris Garrett, Larry Jennings, Sherrie D'Hollosy and Violette Denney. This was a beautiful day made even more beautiful with a donation which will be matched by the Challenge Grant from the Community Foundation of West Georgia. All these funds will be used to help build a FOUNTAIN FOR THE PARK. These are exciting times for all of us to watch each addition to the existing Walls of Honor to recognize our Veterans and Troops. We appreciate all contributions!
